On Tuesday 15th March Drumraney N.S. was transported back in time to 1916. The children dressed in costumes and re enacted the reading of the 1916 proclamation to mark the centenary. Local historian Peter Cunningham told the gathering crowd about Drumraney’s connection with the 1916 rising in which the McCormack brothers from Drumraney played an active role. He also spoke about George Adamson who was the first person to raise the tri colour over Athlone castle and how many children in the school are related to him.A senior pupil from the school,George Nugent, who is a direct descendant of George Adamson raised the flag on the day. The school’s brass band played as the flag was raised.A new proclamation was created by the children from the school and was read by 6th class pupil Katie Silke. Family and friends were there to support the children on the day.

Proclamation of Drumraney N.S. 2016

Irish children, women and men, as we raise our Irish flag today we look to the past to inspire us in our future ahead.

We hope for a country where all people are equal, where all men women and children have the basic rights of food and a home, where homelessness is a word and not a reality for people.

We will look towards a future where regardless of the colour of your skin your beliefs or culture that you are treated with respect and dignity.

We dream of a time ahead when our economy will be strong, allowing everyone to have a job.

We look to our government to help people affected by flooding and support them in building defences and restoring them to their homes.

We ask for a time when everyone regardless of ability is welcomed into education and employment.

We celebrate everything that is good in our nation: our well educated students, our sports people, our writers and poets, our musicians, our artists, our mammies, daddies and families.

We give our support to our friends in other countries, those affected by war and violence that peace and unity will come to them.

We look towards a time when there is no violence in our own country and that people talk to resolve their problems.

We echo the Proclamation read in 1916, a country that guarantees religious and civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens, and declares its resolve to pursue the happiness and prosperity of the whole nation”
